Who am I?

I’m a student at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec.

I study mainly philosophy, but a bit of psychology and religious studies too. I also work as a news writer for the university newspaper, The Tribune.

Most of my time here at McGill is spent reading - I’m reading a lot. As a philosophy student I’m lucky enough to get to devote my time to studying a broad range of texts, to help me develop an understanding of the Western intellectual tradition. One night you might catch me reading John Stewart Mill’s autobiography to find out why music makes him depressed, and another night I’ll be curled up with Plato or Plotinus.

All this reading leaves me buzzing with ideas, and these ideas don’t always fit neatly into a term paper. I made this Substack so I could write up some of my punchier reflections, and share them with anyone who’s interested in finding out what ideas are floating around on a philosophy student’s desk.

What’s this Substack about?

This Substack isn’t just an outlet for ideas I can’t cram into a term paper.

People need access to information to help them form the attitudes and opinions that shape our age. There are plenty of outlets that produce top-tier news coverage—but this Substack hopes to do something meatier.

I want to highlight those hard-to-spot ideas, stories, and cultural phenomena that lurk under the surface of our political and social lives, and mold our cultural environment.

By exploring why the Shakers disappeared, how AI is changing how we understand ourselves, or the tie between universal healthcare and religious movements, we can think more critically about our own culture and political heading.

Some Quick Facts:

Some of my Favourite Philosophers are: Plato, Herder, Charles Taylor, and the German Romantics.

Some of my Favourite Books are: The Tin Drum (Günter Grass), East of Eden (John Steinbeck), The Sailor Who Fell from Grace with the Sea (Yukio Mishima), The Unbearable Lightness of Being (Milan Kundera), Phaedrus (Plato).
